We here at ColumbiaPage thank all of our veterans and military personnel!
Columbia County Director of Veteran's Services Gary Flaherty would like remind all Veterans to register their DD Form 214 with the Columbia County Clerk's Office. This is the form needed before any benefits can be obtained. For more information contact Director Flaherty at 518-828-3610, 518-781-4228 (home), or 518-610-0941 (cell), nyvetscounsil@yahoo.com.
Director Flaherty states, "I find veterans who do not want to go through the process of applying for the benefits they earn. My response is that if they do not want to apply for themselves, please do it for your family. I see to many families that come for help after a Veteran dies and we have to tell that that the Veteran never applied for anything and therefore, they can not get anything." He further states, "In the case of the death of a Veteran, I have been able to establish a system with the various Honor Programs where I can arrange Military Honors in one day to include weekends and holidays". For these and any other veteran issues please contact Director Flaherty.

If you know of a Veteran that should be honored please contact Director Flaherty or Chairperson Holly Tanner.
Once a month, the county Honor a Veteran committee conducts services at the county office building to honor a deceased veteran for the services they rendered to their community and country. The program is sponsored by Congressman Marc Molinaro, NY State Senator Michelle Hinchey and the Columbia County Board of Supervisors. Family, friends and the community are invited to the ceremony. The American Flag is the primary symbol for this honor. Ceremonies are conducted at 9 am. on the fourth Monday of each month from March through November at the Columbia County Office Building, 401 State Street, Hudson, NY. The Flag presented at that ceremony in honor of the recognized Veteran will be flown outside the County Office building for 30 days and then it is presented to the next of kin of the honored Veteran. To be eligible, a Veteran must be deceased 30 days or more and must have resided in Columbia County. The Veteran must have served in the Armed Forces of the United States, must have been Honorably Discharged or died while in the service or was declared Missing in Action (MIA), or served in the Merchant Marine or as a Special Civilian Employee on "Active Duty" during the period December 7, 1941 through August 15, 1945. There are no other specific service dates or length of service required. Both War and Peacetime Service are Honored. Applications are available at the Columbia County Veterans Office located at 389 Fairview Avenue, Hudson, NY 12534.
