FIRE PREVENTION AT TACONIC HILLS 10/03/14
The Taconic Hills Fire Prevention Association was formed in 2003. Departments that are involved are: Ancram, Churchtown, Copake, Craryville, Hillsdale, Mellenville, Philmont, and Taghkanic.
The association had their smoke trailer and talked with the children about dangers in the house and the need for smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The kids were asked if they could point out any hazards that were in the trailer. The kids went into the back of trailer were there was a fireman fully packed up and they smoked the back room up and had them crawl out of the back door.
Firefighters talked with the children and had them practice the safe way to check the door before leaving the room and also talked with them about exiting windows. If on the second floor throw toys out window and close a sheet or blanket in the window to signal firefighters where they are. Firefighters had them practice climbing through a window to get out.
Firefighters also used their phone system to have the children practice to call 911 and give there name and address along with there emergency. Both firemen and volunteer high school student acted as 911 dispatchers.
Each fire company came with a piece of fire apparatus. Each company talked about something different, extinguishers, extrication equipment, how SCBA works, how the fire trucks operate and ladders. Firefighters
stressed the importance of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
Firefighters were fully packed up for the kids to get used to them.
A mock house was used that the firefighters built. The kids got to spray water at the windows and if they are lucky the windows will spin.
