Edward Gibbons was born June14,1929 to John and Eulalia Gibbons in Stuyvesant, NY. He grew up in
Stuyvesant, where he attended elementary and high school.
On September 18, 1950 Edward enlisted for four years in the United States Air Force. After his basic training at Lackland Air Base, Edward recieved Military Police training atTyndall Air Force Base, FL and was then assigned for duty with the Air Police on Korean Peninsula. Airman 2nd Class Edward Gibbons served just shy of fifteen months during hostilities during the Korean War. Returning to the states, he was discharged on July 17, 1954 at Grandview Air Force Base, Grandview, MO.
For his service, A/2C Edward Gibbons was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, the Korean Service Medal (2 BSS), the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Edward returned home and on September 25, 1955 he married Shirley Jean Coon at the Church of Navivity in Stuyvesant, NY. In the ensuing years Edward worked delivering heating oil for Agway, was a heavy equipment operator where he was a small business owner/operator of a bulldozer and backhoe. He retired as Supervisor of Highways for the Town of Ghent.
He remained active in his community. He was a member of the Stuyvesant Fire Company, Valatie American Legion Post 42, Ghent VFW Post 5933, the Columbia County Korean War Veterans, and the Hook Boat Club, where he served as treasurer.
Edward died on May 23, 2006 at Barnwell Nursing Home and was buried at the West Ghent Cemetery. He was 77 years old.
Edward served alongside those who went in harms way to promote democracy and defended freedom around the world. He represents our Nation's finest; recognized and honored.
