Chatham Fire Department acquires two Altair 4X gas meters 02/05/16
With funding provided by a grant from the Firefighters Support Foundation, the Chatham Fire Department acquired two Altair 4X gas meters. These state-of-the-art detectors, similar to those used in underground mining operations, are used to check for levels of noxious gases prior to firefighters entering enclosed structures. These meters identify levels of carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide as well as explosive concentrations of gases and insufficient levels of oxygen.
Residents noticing an odor of gas or being alerted by a carbon monoxide detector alarm should immediately exit the building and then call 9-1-1.
During 2015, the all-volunteer Chatham Fire Department responded to 106 incidents including 22 structure and chimney fires, 31 alarm activations, 16 motor vehicle accidents (including 9 requiring use of extrication equipment) and 3 brush fires. Average response time within Chatham’s district was 4 minutes and 36 seconds from dispatch to arrival on scene. On average, 12 firefighters responded to each incident.
The department is committed to maintaining a high state of training and readiness in order to provide safe and comprehensive prevention and fire response services in the village and surrounding areas.
