After 71 years Army Cpl. Walter A. Smead comes home 09/14/21
After 71 years, Army Cpl. Walter A. Smead comes home. Cpl. Smead served in World War II in the 10th Mountain Division and in Korea where he was killed in action. He was killed at the age of 24 on the sixth day of a retreat at the Chosin Reservoir on December 6, 1951. His remains were turned over to the United States by the North Korean government.
Cpl. Smead's remains arrived at Bradley International Airport and then escorted to Hadley, Saratoga County where he was from. The Massachusetts State Police, New York State Police, Saratoga County Sheriff's Department, Patriot Guard and family members were in the procession.
The procession stopped shortly at the Love's Truck Stop on Route 22 in Canaan. There they were met by members of the Canaan Protective Fire Company and the Red Rock Volunteer Fire Company who displayed the colors.
Cpl. Smead's remains will be interred at the Gerald B. H. Solomon National Cemetery in Saratoga on September 20th.
