Columbia County 911 recieved a number of calls reporting a male subject that jumped from the Rip Van Winkle Bridge that crosses over the Hudson River. The Greenport Fire Department and Greenport Rescue Squad were dispatched just before 11:30a.m.

The New York State Police are leading the investigation.

Other agencies on the scene are: Columbia County Sheriff's Department, Greenport Police Department, Columbia County Fire Coordinators Office, and the United States Coast Guard. Dive teams from the New York State Police, Columbia County Sheriff's Department and Greenport Rescue are on the scene.

It is reported that some personal effects were found near a suicide hotline telephone on the pedestrian walkway.

A LifeNet helicopter was called to Greenport Rescue unit one but was then cancelled.

Greenport Fire units cleared the scene just after 4p.m.
