On Monday evening, June 29, the Greenport Fire Department
held a Department Drill, simulating an aircraft crash with exposures. Utilizing our Department frequency, GFD was dispatched
at approximately 1830 to the Acme Sales parking lots on Rt 9 for an alarm activation.
Upon arrival, Department
Chief, Gary Mazzacano found a "downed" aircraft with fire . First units in from Becraft Co. 2 and
Greenport Station 1 were ordered to the location and to implement their foam apparatus. Two hand lines each from 263
and 251 made the initial attack. Because of the unknown condition of the hydrant system in the yard, Tankers 261 and 262 prepared
for a tanker shuttle. Third due Engine, 241, layed a 700' LDH feeder from the nearest hydrant . This proved to be
a sufficient water source. 241 backed up the foam lines with two additional hand lines. 261 supplied a feeder to foam
unit 263 for their operation. 262, a tanker with 2500 gallons of water and a 1000gpm pump, tied into a second hydrant
on the south side of the plant and stood by.Engine 242 a 1000/1000 engine, assisted at the original hydrant and it's crews
acted as a "FAST" unit.
Rescue M-25 arrived and Department
crews utilized hand and power tools to gain access to the fuselage (a donated bus). Greenport Fire Police under Captain
Pat Kilmer secured the area and the Department's Brush Unit, M-26 monitored and controlled the large pile of burning pallets
from a side field.
Following multiple evolutions, Department
Chiefs gave a critique of the event. Under the direction of Department Chief Gary Mazzacano and Assistants John Onufrychuck
and Bob Banks, units picked up and were in service by 2100.
